3 Best Skincare Ingredients for your 20's

Make sure your skin care routine includes these super ingredients

Your 20's is the best time to solidify a great skin care routine. Not all skin care ingredients work best for all skin types but no matter what works for you these 3 ingredients below are ones you shouldn't skip

Retinoids

Over the last couple of years Retinoids have been getting the hype they deserve. This super ingredient is the only scientifically proven active to actually reverse the signs of ageing and stimulate the production of collagen! Wow right?! But this active does so much more and we want to tell you all about it. Retinoids are also known to;

  1. Reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing collagen production

  2. Helps to unclog pores and exfoliate the skin

  3. Evens out skin tone and clears hyperpigmentation

  4. Assists your skin in absorbing other skincare ingredients

  5. Clear acne

  6. Increases skin cell turnover

So what is a Retinoid?

A Retinoid has many different names and forms such as Retinol, Vitamin A, Retinyl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Retinoic Acid, Tretinoin and so much more. Beware though as a higher percentage of this ingredient being used for the the first time too intensely can cause skin purging. We recommend starting slow with a low percentage and build up. Start with using the ingredient twice a week, at night only as this active will make your skin extra sensitive to the sun, and if your skin is handling it well then keep adding a night until you are using it every night. It is also best if you give this ingredient space to shine and don't use it with any other actives

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are a fantastic ingredient to add to your skincare routine. They protect skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure. Free radicals can assault the skin, damaging healthy skin cells and creating oxidative stress. Antioxidants also allow the skin the repair itself and correct visible damage such as rosacea by reducing inflammation. But what else can it do? Let us tell you;

  1. Stimulate collagen production for youthful skin

  2. Is antiaging and can help reduce wrinkles

  3. Reduce inflammation

  4. Protect the skin from UV exposure

  5. Help reduce hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone

  6. Brightens and Lightens the skin

What ingredients are Antioxidants?

The most popular Antioxidant by far is Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid. Also known as Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, it accelerates the production of both collagen and elastin to help keep the skin plum and firm. Other popular Antioxidants include, but are not limited to Vitamin E, Resveratrol, Ferulic Acid and Green Tea

SPF

Surprised? You shouldn't be. There is a reason dermatologists, medical estheticians and skincare junkies go on and on about sunscreen. If you're not using SPF every morning you might as well throw the rest of your skincare routine out the window. Broad-spectrum SPF protects from both UVA and UVB rays from the sun. UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and play a greater role in premature skin ageing. UVB rays damage the surface layer of the skin causing skin burns. Not convinced yet? Here a 6 more reasons to wear sunscreen daily;

  1. Protects you against skin cancer

  2. Protects the skin against premature ageing

  3. Prevents photoaging and wrinkle formation caused by the sun

  4. Protects the rest of your skincare routine (Vitamin C for example is unstable and can be easily destroyed by the sun)

  5. Keeps the skin looking youthful

  6. Helps you maintain an even skin tone

What kind of Sunscreen should I use?

There are two types of sunscreen, Mineral and Chemical. Mineral sunscreen is a physical form of sunscreen that sits on top of the skin to deflect and scatter both UVA and UVB rays. Mineral sunscreens can be better for acne-prone skin as they are less likely to clog pores. Sensitive skin will also benefit from mineral sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens contain organic, carbon-based compounds that create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat then releasing the heat from the skin. Due to its thinner state, it is ideal for everyday use and allows for skincare ingredients to be added easily
